Help Please, temp probe acting weird

I have had my apex jr. for about 2 weeks now, and today my temp. probe started to act up. The temp. reading started to jump around by +/- .2-.5 degrees at a time (rather than gradually climbing and falling). Is my probe already toast ?? As per instruction the probe is not fully submerged and is upstream of the heater, in the first overflow chamber of my AIO tank.

I have personally had better luck with the probe fully submerged. Could you show us a graph of what is going on so we can see the whole picture a little better? A picture of how its mounted and where its located would help too.

I would submerge it all the way. Seeing the angle that it is at, it is plausable that a fairly small wave would be enough to expose the tip to air. That may not solve the issue, but its worth a shot.

Why can't the probe be fully submerged?

It can. Its certain models of pH, orp, and conductivity probes (those that can be refilled with reference solution) that cant be submerged all the way.

I think that all of the probes Neptune sells can be fully submerged.

The problem comes with the wires and prolonged exposure to salt water. The insulation on the wires hardens, then eventually cracks. Pull a pump or heater out of your sump that's been in salt water for a couple of years and see how stiff the wires become vs. wires that are out of the water. All it would take is a pin hole for the probe to start reading incorrectly.

So if you want your probes to last the longest, keep the tops out of the water but if they get submerged nothing bad is going to happen short term.
