New to Neptune APEX Sytem.Sure am confused!

Advertising description claims there isn't any need to connect a computer. Yet the start documentation stays connect CPU in safe mode to download firmware updates over the Ethernet. (which I've done ) Firmware to me is/was a chip such as an Eprom. If I don't need a computer,why?

I have downloaded the zip file. It currently resides in the download/document diirectory. Then I'm instructed connect APEX to the computer via the Ethernet port and APEX decompress the file, and update firmware.

Doesn't sound right to me. What a am I missing?

Sounds like you are getting it right.

You do not need a computer in the system for normal operations. You cannot update firmware over a wirelss network. So you download the firmware update file to a computer, update the firmware in the Apex from the computer via the ethernet cable and then you can disconnect your computer ethernet cable linkage to the Apex system if you want to.

You will need an ethernet cable to connect your Apex base unit to your router, range extender or a bridge for local area Wi-Fi and internet connectivity if you plan to you plan to operate operate the classic dashboard interface over Wi-Fi or Fusion over the internet.

So you do not need a computer to operate your Apex system. You do need one hooked up temporarily for firmware maintenance.
