Updating Firmware (failure to unlock) 4.40 Mac

I have my apex connected directly to my mac, flash has no problem finding the controller but cannot unlock it (wireless off). I am trying to update to version 4.40. Strangely, I was never asked for a password using this computer (I had to switch form using an older one because it couldn't support the new firmware). I did a configuration reset on the controller, tried powering it on and off several times, rebooted my network, but still no luck. This is the second time in two weeks my controller has gone offline claiming to out of date firmware to be the problem. I love the thing when it works, but all the updates and network configuration stuff is a pain.

When I attempt to upload the firmware I get these messages:

    Firmware update loading
    Firmware update loaded successfully
    Logging in to controller
Controller connect failed: Operation timed out
    Controller login failed

When it's connected directly to your Mac are you able to ping the Apex?

So the guy at apex had me go to configure in the flash utility and "Configure IP Address Automatically". I did that but am still unable to connect to the controller. I get the message "Controller Login Failed". Could this have something to do with the password? I installed flash on this computer but have never been asked for the password to authorize the firmware update, where it would always ask on my previous computer.

Yes I did, I scheduled a meeting with the support guy and he logged onto my computer and punched in a bunch of numbers and stuff (I have no idea what) and now it works. The dude got everything fixed up, but he sounded like one of the least happy people I have ever met.
