Optical water level sensor in skimmer waste bucket.

Im setting up my sump and getting my apex up and running. Right now i am getting my skimmer squared away, and i wanted to run the waste line into a bucket, which i can drain less often than cleaning out the collection cup. My concern is the skimmer going nuts and overfilling the bucket, and putting gallons of water on the floor. Would an optical water level sensor be able to see the skimmate in the bucket, or does it have to be clear water? Im thinking this way i can have the apex shut the skimmer down if the bucket gets full.

Yes that should work; I use an os with wet skimmate (dark brown, not thick) and it senses when the level rises and shuts off the skimmer. Be sure to clean the sensor face off weekly or so often. And mount it so the tip is pointed sideway or up, not down.
