    Temperature swings

I had a discussion on temp swings and would like more input. I try to keep my tank at 78° but another reefer suggested that setting my chiller to 82° and my heater to 76° would be sufficient. It also would take a load off of my electricity.

Yes, raising the temp for the cooler to turn on will help with the power bill but it's still going to be somewhat dependent on the ambient temp of the room the system is in. I think 82 is a bit too high for the chiller, there's no room for error. If there's a power outage or the chiller craps out you'll have a lot less time to react before you cook the tank. I'd say 79 or 80 would be better with an alarm set for 81. Then have the chiller set to drop the temp a half degree in Fusion.

Same goes for the heaters in reverse. 76 isn't too bad on the low end though.

I'd be interested to see what others have to say on this too.

It really depends on what livestock you have. Most tropical fish and corals can handle a higher temp and show improved growth and metabolism in the low 80s. Subtropical species like the blue spotted jawfish and many species of snails will croak fairly quickly if temp is consistently above 78 degrees. You do have to be careful in the 80s because a heavily stocked tank can deplete oxygen too fast in the mid to upper 80s and lead to a tank crash. You also have to make sure any temp swings are slow. Any more than 4 degrees in 1 day or 2 degree within an hour and you might see major problems.
