I just purchased a DOS and set it up tonight to do automatic water changes. It's pretty slick. I'm doing about 10 gallons a week so not a huge amount.
Looking at the interval summary, it says the pump will be dosing 6000 ml/day at 25 ml/minute. That means 4 hours per day or 120 hours per month. I watched a video that said the heads have a 600 hour life which means 5 months at the rate I'm using them?!
That seems like an impossibly short life. Am I calculating this correctly?
That 600 hours is at max speed of 250ml/min. The life is based more on volume added (about 2000 gallons) but time used and number of stop starts also plays a lesser role, so I wouldn't expect the full 2000 gallons at the lower pump speed.
The heads should last you a couple years.

When the heads fail, do they leak?
If you dont proactively replace and the rollers and tubing wear out really badly, they can create a slow siphon or potentially burst the silicone tubes. Even if you are nowhere near the 2000 gallons, I would not let a head go without replacement more than 2-3 years because silicon eventually dried out and becomes easier to crack.
