    UPS Questions

    1. Does my ups have to match the total amp draw of my tank?

    2. What is the best way to hook up a ups to the new Apex? EB32 by itself, or should I put the EB832 and a 12 volt power supply for the head unit on the ups?

    I have a APC Back-UPS R S 1300 and my total watt draw is around 790.

Both watts and VA need to be more than the maximum tank load (VA is max amps times 130V)

Your current watt draw is marginal and I would suggest upgrading to a 1500VA unit and repurposing that for your computer.

Plug the EB into the UPS. Plug the 12V power supply into a regular outlet, and enable Power Monitor mode on the Misc Setup Fusion page. Now your Apex knows when the wall power is off, even though everything is functioning normally on the battery backup. You can use this info via the If Power Apex Off command to send yourself a text about the power outage (assuming your home network is also on a UPS), and turn down/off lights, pumps, skimmer, reactor, etc, in order to save battery run time.

I am just setting up Neptune Systems 2016 with EB838 and i have a small UPS, APC BN600G 600VA 360W max. Can i use this UPS as a backup and run only the critical equipments/devices on power failure?

I roughly calculated the max watts from the spec of the equipments i use:

    Light 1: Kessil A360WE 90W
    Light 2: Kessil A360WE 90W
Return Pump: Since 3.0, 3 to 105W max
    Heater: Cobalt 150W
Skimmer: Bubble magus curve 5, 8W
Refugium light: Kessil H80 Grow mode, 15W
Not sure how much extra watts the EB832 will consume by itself based on 24v 1Link accessories connected (guessing not much)

With all the above it totals around 450-480 Watts

    - total max watts calculated above is more than my UPS watts
    - If i remove lights and heater from ups that save a lot of watts, but i like to plug into EB and control/monitor it
    - As you mentioned by using 12v power so apex can be aware of power failure and can act on turning off devices we like, but the sudden use of all equipments via UPS until apex turns off on a trigger isn't bad?

Can anyone advice how i can go about. thanks in advance.

You need a different UPS. Use that on your router and buy a bigger one for the apex. That size UPS would only run a single pump at 1% for an hour or two tops anyway.

APC Back-UPS 1500 or Cyberpower 1500VA are the most common and provide a pretty reasonable run time.

No, that's exactly what a UPS is designed to do, assuming it is powerful enough to handle the load. I've had up to 700W of devices including the Apex transfer instantly to a UPS without problem, on several occasions. (Our power grid is weak.)

Assuming the UPS is rated for the load that occurs for the couple seconds before the apex turns it off. If you tried to put 700W on a 500W UPS, even if for only a few seconds, you could permanently damage the UPS
