Which water level sensors to use

I just ordered but have not received the new ApexEL. I would like to use water level sensors. Can I use your breakout box to plug sensors directly into EL? Should I use your optical sensors or third party float switches? Is there any way to granular level water level readings or do I have to use a few switches?
    Thanks,

Optical sensors require an FMM. Float switches can be added to a breakout box. Opticals are snail proof since they have no moving parts, but appear to be more prone to premature electrical failure than floats. Ideally you would want to use some of both, but doing so costs more than using only one type.
