    Salinity Probe Reading

    Hi
Using a new salinity refractometer i get a consistent reading of 33, on the Apex 2016 probe it reads 28.4 (2 weeks old)
Now in my learning i have been in and out of the Apex like a yo yo learning and setting things swithcing on and off etc, is there a chance i need to recalibrate the probe or would you say the refractometer is way out although new.

    thank you
    Malc

Was the refractometer calibrated with 35 ppt solution?

Did you warm the packet to tank temp before you calibrated the apex?

Did you calibrate the cond probe before letting it soak in the tank at least overnight?

No i just unpacked it and used it, it said ready to use.

The only solutions i have is for the PH probe 7 and 10

I have never calibrated any probes as yet, the PH and ORP are not in use just yet,

Salinity probe has been in tank for 3 days now

    New tank setup
    thank you

Then I wouldn't trust either to be correct. Grab some refractometer calibration fluid or mix your own based on the Randy Holmes Farley article on DIY calibration solutions. Use that to verify if the refractometer is accurate and micro adjust if it isn't dead on.

For the cond probe, pick up some 53mS/cm packets or make your own based on the same article mentioned above. Make sure temp compensation is set to 2.2 to start, make sure the solution exactly matches tank temp, and for the dry step, lightly rinse in RODI and pad dry with a paper towel.

Once both are properly calibrated, the cond probe is a bit more accurate than a refractometer, so I tend to trust it more, but if they don't line up within 1 ppt of each other, then something went wrong with the calibration of one or both of them that needs to be troubleshooted.
