The Apex Jr has to be hardwired with an Ethernet cable to your router, WiFi Adapter, or a power-line adapter at all times to keep the internet connection working. The only Apex unit that have builtin WiFi is the Apex 2016 model or the Apex El units and do not need to have an Ethernet connected.

Got it. So if your router is not near your aquarium you are SOL.

Also ... if you use DHCP for the IP address it will not regain access if router is rebooted. Please consider using a static IP address.

No you are not out of luck, spend $25.00 and get a wireless extender and plug your Jr directly into it with a short ethernet cable. Of course your original Router must have Wi-Fi capability. I have been using the Netgear Wi-Fi extender I purchased on Amazon for almost two years now. I have a long ethernet cable I use to do updates whilst hardwired and then remove it and the APEX runs great off the extender.
