CAT 5 cable as an aquabus cable

    Hi,

I read an article on making DIY aquabus cables : https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/di...cables.356801/

I tried this using CAT 5E "link enhanced" cable 350mHz

It doesn't work. Anyone know what the "link enhanced" is referring to and if this is the problem? Do I need just a CAT 5 cable? Or any other suggestions?

    Thanks

Don't follow what that thread said. If you miswire something or get a splash of water on that connector you will fry your apex. Not worth saving $10 vs buying a premade cable.

    Hi,
The thing is I need a 30 meter cable, so its really not so easy to buy, and I live in the UAE as well, hence why I would try the DIY option.

Then just make darn sure that both ends of the cable match in the color used. Be very careful and it is easy to mistake a solid color with one that is the same color with a white stripe.

The only difference between cat5 and cat5e is that the pairs are twisted more tightly.

The much better option is a long Aquabus cable. usbfirewire.com makes high-quality custom long cables specifically for use with the Apex. They are available up to 125' long. Neptune Systems actauulky recommends these to customers needing long cables.

    They ship internationally.

    $100 for 125 Feet! -That's expensive.

You need to make sure you're properly crimping your ends on the CAT5 cable. Make sure they are in the same order on both ends and test using network tester for open pairs, shorts, etc.
