There are different schools of thought on this.

One school thinks elements should be dosed when they are used by the coral, which is primarily during the daytime when they are photosynthesizing.

Another school thinks pH stability is more important so dosing ALK during nighttime hours would provide a benefit.

I personally think both schools have some merit but anecdotally I have found KH stability to be more important to corals than pH stability. That would lean more toward daytime dosing, but I prefer to make it simple and just dose evenly over 24 hours to get a happy medium.

In most cases no. The only time one would need to disable dosing during feeding is if they are very heavily dosing ALK, notice heavy precipitation in the sump when the return is off, and prefer not to add any circulation in the sump when the return is off. Most people don't dose heavily enough for it to create a problem.

I believe one of the keys to success is in this post by Zombie. 24 HOURS. It has worked for me. I suggest you take your current (and future) dosages of ALK and CA (and MG if you want to go there -- not critical) and divide them into equal parts over 24 HOURS. Equal parts each HOUR. You will see that your PH (and KH) will stabilize throughout the day....and not be dependent on the photoperiod. 24 HOURS. All day long. Good advice.
