VDM dimming on Viparspectra black box lights

Hello has anyone successfully set up 0-10v vdm dimming on these lights?
I’m looking into it if I find a solution I’ll post about it

When asking a question like this, it’s helpful to be as specific as you can, for example, provide the exact model of hardware, not just a brand.
Please do not send me PMs with technical questions or requesting assistance - use the forums for Apex help. PM me ONLY if the matter is of a private or personal nature. Thanks.

It’s the 165W model with the digital display and wireless remote. Here’s a link to the exact model.

I took it apart last night and saw this

So it seems that the driver is dimmed via PWM you can see it on the board it says

    On/off
    +24V
    PWM
    Gnd

So I’ll have to get a 0-10v to pwm signal converter

I’ll have to put a multimeter to the leads to see the range when dimmed

Turmanlucas, have you received the interface? Were you successful in linking your light to apex? How many viparspectre 165w are you using? I'm trying to achieve same results , I am using 4 viparspectre lights on my 180 display with the thought of adding a 5th. Thanks

Yes sorry I’ve been meaning to post on how i did it and forgot to get to it, but it’s all up and running and it work pretty well I’ll have to say.

So on the light driver board you’ll see the
    On/off
    +12v
    Pwm
    ground

You’ll leave the on/off wires going from both drivers to the display/pwm control unit connected to tell the less when to come on. As far as time

The next wire which is the +12 one will have to go from the driver to the pwm converter on the vin spot and then back to the display/pwm control unit You only need one of the 12v wires to power the module I suggest using the channel that you would want to kick in first but to be honest I don’t think it matters which one you use, the other I just clipped so it doesn’t short on anything.

The pwm from the driver just goes Into the pwm converter just make sure to put it in the right channel you want

And then both ground wires from both drivers you will tie together and put into the pwm converter and also tie in to display/pwm control unit

They newer pwm converter and more then one Input on grownd and vin which makes it easier to put in between the driver and the display/pwm control unit

The version # on the pwm converter was v4.5 instead of v4.2 like I showed before definitely made it easier putting it in because those thin wires aren’t the easiest thing to shove in there lol

I bought 2 x2channel converters they also sold 4 channel ones too but I needed 2 channel per box they ended up sending me the 4 channel ones I don’t know if it was an accident or if that’s all they have now but I wanted one converter per box so that way I can keep it all fully Inclosed in each box.

Then hooking up the apex 0-10v cables is pretty easy channel 1 is pin 3(ground) and pin 4 (0-10v), and channel 2 is pin 7(ground) and pin 8(0-10v) on the ethernet cable.

No problem man also I recommend before you take your lights apart I would order the SB Reef light boards to replace the original led board that came with your lights. They put out a more true UV spectrum and your corals will grow wayyyy better I wish I had changed the led board way sooner I’m getting about 1/4-1/2 inch growth per week on most of my sps corals since I made the change a few months ago. The white and blue channels that comes on all black boxes really just suck compared to the SB reef light boards.
I want to say they are $60 per board.

Yes I got them in, got the apex wires hooked into the converter, trying to figure out which wires I need to cut on the light end, so your saying in only need to cut one of the channel wires +12 and leave the other alone ?

But yes the board only needs one of the two 12v leads I’m not sure if it would be fine to put both in there but I used one lol

leave the on wires connected on both channels youll have to still use the timers for ch1 and 2. i havent figured out a way to have the apex control the channels on and off without using more than one outlet on the apex.
