Using an old smartphone as a camera

Has anyone tried using an old smartphone for an IP camera? I was thinking about using this app to turning an old Android phone into a fishcam.

Using an old smartphone as a camera

If the video stream is MJPEG, it just might work.

Install the app. Point your browser to the ip address plus port#. It will give you some options if what you want. And walla

I got a hold of an old SmartPhone yesterday and set it all up. Just had to set up the port forwarding and get the correct URL. Now I have it working.

For anyone trying this the URL for that app is http://IPaddress:port/videofeed

    Thanks for the replies.

Lightbulb Use an android cell phone as your IP Cam

Ok so here it is I decided to check some of the apps out to see if I can setup a cell phone as an IP Cam. I did find one that somewhat works....

    1. Download
    IP Webcam by Pavel Khlebovich

    HERE!

Then after install setup your app and start the broadcasting. Copy the ipaddress:port/videofeed on mine it was http://192.168.0.101:8080/videofeed into your apex cam section as local. I have not tried the port forwarding with this method.

You may need to refresh your apex dashboard for this.

    Hope this helps

Works with an old Verizon Incredible II. Great find to get this up and running! The only problem is that now I need a new alarm clock...

Now for the biggest cost of this, I just paid $12 for a tripod to hold the phone. So for my total cost it was:

Phone: Free (dug it out of a recycle bin)
    App: Free
    Tripod: $12

Here's a still from it via the Apex dashboard.

Is there anything out there for iPhones that will do the same? I have an old 3G that could be a great ip camera if that works.

Looks like there are a few apps out there that might work. Download a couple and give them a try.

I'm glad it worked for you. Also good to bump this old thread up.

How do you determine what the IP address should be? Use what's listed in my router page for the phone?

You'll need to do port forwarding on the router. You'll also probably want to use a service like dyndns as public your public ip will change from time to time. Google how to do that on your router and you'll probably find step by step.

Goofy question guys.. How do you keep the feed going 24/7? I mean the power settings within the camera. Mine always powers off, even if it's connected to a charger.. If I could get that to work continuously, I'd be all set?

    Any suggestions?

If you are using an Android phone, you can set the device to be always on when charging through the developer menu. Google your android version and how to enter developer mode to learn how.

Given the cost of a used tablets, you're better off with those anyway so you can actually see it from a distance. I just got a Fire hd 8 and a fire hd 10 used for $40 from craigslist.
